"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there,
wondering, fearing, doubting,
dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before."
- Edgar Allan Poe, "The Raven"

Kismet's World of Darkness offers free, unofficial, fan-made resources for World of Darkness roleplaying games, for new and experienced players alike. You can find many archived articles for classic games like Vampire: the Masquerade here, but you will also discover material you can use across games and versions. And if you're not sure what that means, don't worry; keep reading, and you'll soon find out.

The Storytellers Vault is a way for you to publish material for White Wolf/Onyx Path games with permisison, and to receive payment for your work. It is worthwhile to check out their terms, templates, and selections. The materials posted on this site, however, have always been offered freely to the community and will continue to be offered in that spirit.

This entire site is in the midst of an overhaul, so some pages will look and operate different than others. Since this is a one-woman production and worked on in my spare time, it could take a while, but in the end, the site will be more mobile-friendly and the resources will be more accessible. I will also be adding another defunct fan WoD site that I was given permission to archive and will be adding new material of my own. Thank you for your patience in the meantime!

Should you have any comments or questions, feel free to send me an email.

What is the World of Darkness Setting?

The World of Darkness is a place you already know and can recognize because it has been summoned from the darkest corners of our minds. It is a horror game setting based on the real world - the living world that already surrounds us with wonders and terrors, both old and new - but it gives everything a grim and gritty twist. It reflects the cities and history we're familiar with through the cracked mirrors of mystery, myth, and madness.

The werewolves and vampires that rampage on film are bright and simple compared to the monsters that lurk in the World of Darkness. And they are joined by a host of other strange beings, from immortal mummies to very mortal mages, that scheme, hide, fight, and die mostly hidden from mortal eyes. But even the normal, clueless people have secrets and can end up on bizarre and dangerous adventures through the world they thought they knew.

Any character you play in a WoD game can be a hell of a lot of fun, and there are many types and powers to choose from. You will get to define your character's abilities and tell your character's story based on the World of Darkness ruleset so when you go up against challenges there's a system to fairly determine what happens. All of this is developed in lines of gaming books which give you the systems and advice you will need to go places no film or show will take you.

The World of Darkness is an ongoing experience created by groups of players and Storytellers, both online and in real life. It can be as haunted and forlorn as you like, but it can also be frenetic, sleek, mystical and even glamorous. Even though many of the game's books are written for the modern day, you can place your game in the past and anywhere in the world. And even if you've been playing in the setting for years, there are always new options to explore - which is why this web site is here.

How Long Has It Been Published?

The classic World of Darkness was first developed through games like Vampire: the Masquerade and Werewolf: the Apocalypse from 1991 to 2004.  It had its own rules systems and supernatural types and offered a lot of variety.  The game was released in three editions that updated the rules and storylines a little each time. After it was brought to a close, it was called the "old World of Darkness" and eventually the "classic World of Darkness." In recent years, 20th anniversary editions have been made and newer books are being produced now.  Paradox Interactive renamed the setting "One World of Darkness" after buying it in 2015. Vampire: the Masquerade 5th edition was released in 2018, greatly overhauling and updating the game.

The New World of Darkness emerged in 2004 and has been growing ever since.  Everything was re-imagined from the ground up, leading to a new crop of monsters, stories, and systems. The setting is being developed in its second edition by Onyx Path Publishing and has has been christened "Chronicles of Darkness" by Paradox. Since both incarnations of the World of Darkness have a lot to offer, this site will respect and expand upon both of them.
